Benjamin Franklin is such an important figure in American history that when it came time to honor his 300th birthday it was decided that two coins were needed. One to recognize his many scientific accomplishments, the other to celebrate his role in the founding of the United States.
The obverse depicts the great patriot and statesman in the autumn of his years, while the reverse features a 1776 Continental Currency dollar, showcasing the contributions made by Franklin to early American coinage and currency design.
This proof $1 Dollar silver coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. It is made the same composition and size as the old (pre-1936) Silver Dollars- 90% silver, 10% copper, 38.5mm diameter and containing 0.7734 Troy oz of silver.
