1992 Columbus Quincentenary Silver Dollar Proof and Clad Half Dollar Set, issued to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus discovery of America.
The obverse of the Silver Dollar features Christopher Columbus standing with a flag in his right hand and a globe to his left. Ships and land can be seen rising in the background. The reverse of the coin features a split view of a fifteenth century sailing vessel and a twentieth century space shuttle.
On the Half Dollar the obverse features a view of Columbus stepping into the New World. In the background a row boat and the Santa Maria ship can be seen. The reverse of the coin shows all three of Columbus' ships, the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.
The Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint (uncirculated versions were minted at the Denver Mint). The Dollar is the same composition and size as the old (pre-1936) Silver Dollars- 90% silver, 10% copper, 38.5mm diameter and containing 0.7734 Troy oz of silver.
The Half Dollar is Copper with a Nickel outer layer, and was minted at the San Francisco Mint.
