1973 Republic of Minerva Gold and Silver $35 Unc
Product Description
1973 Republic of Minerva $35 gold and silver coin, in beautiful uncirculated condition.
The Minerva reefs lie 270 miles southwest of the main island of Tongatapu in the Kingdom of Tonga. Although currently part of the Kingdom, in January 1972 an American named Michael Oliver established the micronation of the Republic of Minerva, as a libertarian society.
The "country" eventually had their own currency issued, minted at the Letcher Mint in California. Only 10,500 of these coins were minted, and each contains 24 grams of .999 fine silver, and 10 grains (0.648 grams) of 24 ct (pure) gold.
The Tongans rejected the Republic of Minerva's claims and sent an expedition to oust the libertarians (a couple of fisheries vessel with 100 Tongan soldiers), the entire occupation lasting less than 6 months.
In original holder, the plastic holder has many small scratches but the coin inside is like new. Also includes the original display stand to set the holder in.
Very rare and unusual coin.
