1930 Uruguay Constitution Centennial Gold 5 Pesos
Product Description
1930 Uruguay Constitution Centennial 5 peso gold coin, AU condition. Coin contains 0.2501 troy oz of gold in .9167 fineness.
Struck only in 1930, the original release was only 14,415 coins. However 100,000 were struck, with the balance retained by the government, the bulk of which were sold in 1998 by the Argentine Central Bank. Most wound up in the hands of collectors, so nice examples are not too hard to find.
The obverse features a bust of Jose Artigas, the 19th century army general revered as "the father of Uruguayan independence." The motto "Republica Oriental Del Uruguay" refers to the nation's location on the east bank of the Uruguay River.
The reverse commemorates the centennial of Uruguay's Constitution, established in 1830 and inspired by the U.S. Constitution.
