Product Description
The Netherlands (or Holland) has a long history of issuing gold coins, with many different names, weights and denominations. Dutch coin names are ducats, florins, florins d'or, duits, stuivers, cavaliers, gulden or guilders, and ducatons. Most of these have been issued in multiple and fractional versions.
This coin is an 1876 10 Gulden or Florin (guilder in English).
The obverse features a portrait of King Willem III facing right. Above is the inscription GOD ZIJ MET ONS. Below is KONING WILLEM DE DERDE. The two parts of this legend are separated by two stars. The reverse shows a crowned lion bearing a sword and arrows on a large shield surmounted by a large crown. At either side is the denomination 10 G. The date appears below, and the legend KONINGRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN, above. An axe and a caduceus privy marks appear on either side of the date.
The coin contains 0.1947 Troy oz of gold in an 90% alloy. About 1.5 million of the 1876 coin were minted. The one we have in stock is in excellent, almost uncirculated condition.
