1875 Netherlands Gold 10 Gulden AU
Product Description
The Netherlands (or Holland) has a long history of issuing gold coins, with many different names, weights and denominations. Dutch coin names are ducats, florins, florins d'or, duits, stuivers, cavaliers, gulden or guilders, and ducatons. Most of these have been issued in multiple and fractional versions.
This coin is an 1875 10 Gulden or Florin (guilder in English) and was a single year design. While King Willem III 10 Gulden coins were issued from 1975 to 1889 the design was changed in 1876 for the rest of the series.
The obverse features a portrait of King Willem III facing right. Above is the inscription GOD ZIJ MET ONS. Below is KONING WILLEM DE DERDE. The two parts of this legend are separated by two stars. The reverse shows a crowned lion bearing a sword and arrows on a large shield surmounted by a large crown. At either side is the denomination 10 G. The date 1875 appears at the top, and the legend KONINGRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN, running anticlockwise from 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock. This legend is retrograde, i.e. it is read from the outside of the coin rather than the inside. An axe and a caduceus privy marks appear between the shield and the inscription.
The coin contains 0.1947 Troy oz of gold in an 90% alloy. About 3 million of the 1875 coin were minted. The one we have in stock is in excellent, almost uncirculated condition.
